Sections
Community Affairs

The Community Affairs Section personnel and programs are under the direction of the Office of the Chief of Police. The objectives of the Community Affairs programs and activities are to provide comprehensive crime prevention programs to all segments of the community, to serve as a well-informed, professional public information office, to link the organization's mission with community participation through the establishment of Police Community Centers, and to support Department operations through crime analysis.

Under the command of a Police Sergeant, the Community Affairs Section is comprised of police officers, civilian personnel, and volunteers. Currently, the Community Affairs Section maintains four Police Community Centers located within the City. Each of these centers has a Senior Lead Officer assigned to it to facilitate the needs of the community. Each of the Inglewood Police Community Centers is located in one of the four police "beats" of the City.

Programs

602(n) Program is in response to the problem of trespassers who congregate in and around houses and apartment buildings, sell and use drugs, and intimidate law-abiding tenants with fear and violence. The Inglewood Police Department, in conjunction with the property owners, implemented procedures for making arrests for trespassing under section 602(n) of the Penal Code.

Anti-Gunfire Campaigns, through media resources and advertisements, inform the Inglewood community about the dangers of indiscriminate firing of weapons during New Year's Eve and July 4th celebrations. In an effort to curb this ritual of random gunfire from celebrations, the Inglewood Police Department requests involvement from the community.

Citizen Police Academy, started in 1993, is a 10-week program designed to familiarize Inglewood residents and merchants with the inner workings of the Police Department. Many of the graduates go on to be volunteers for the Police Department.

Citizen Volunteer Program recruits Inglewood residents, especially from the Citizen Police Academy, to perform non-hazardous duties within the Police Department and assist with various programs.

Explorer Post Program (Post 651) recruits boys and girls between 14 and 17 years of age. The Explorer Academy is a 10-week curriculum that promotes good citizenship and interest in a law enforcement career. The Explorer Program is coordinated by Explorer Advisors and the Commanding Officer, Community Affairs Section, Sgt. Ron Ragan.

Inglewood Rental Property Owners Association Program, started in 1992, assists rental property owners with reduction of crime on rental property in Inglewood. City and police resources are organized to reduce crimes, such as drug dealing and gang activities, in rental property housing. The Association's office hours are Tuesday and Thursday, from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., at the Beat 4 Police Community Center. For more information, call the office at 310-330-5346.

Inglewood Police Activities League (IPAL) is a non-profit corporation that builds partnerships between youth, police and the community through recreational, athletic and educational programs that recruits boys and girls between 12 and 14 years of age.  The IPAL Academy is a 10-week curriculum that promotes character building activities under the guidance and constructive influence of law enforcement officers and other adult role models.
